Alaska Cruise: A Wonderful Week at Sea
Share
To celebrate Shay's 45th birthday, Yohann's mom’s 70th birthday, and our 19th wedding anniversary, we decided to do something big. We spent a week aboard Holland America’s Koningsdam, cruising the breathtaking waters of Alaska.
Yes, it rained. A lot. But between glimpses of glaciers, wildlife sightings, spa time, and hearty bowls of chili in Skagway, we found plenty of sunshine in the experience.
Cruise Overview & Cost Breakdown
We booked the 7-day Alaska cruise roundtrip from Vancouver and opted for a balcony stateroom. The cost for a 2-person balcony room was approximately $4,700, which included Holland America's "Have It All" package (wifi, a specialty dinner, and up to 15 drinks per day per person which was more than enough for us).
A friend gifted Shay a Greenhouse Spa pass for the week (normally $228). Between the warm hydrotherapy pool, heated lounge chairs, and a surprise whale sighting from the spa window it's worth every penny.
We also made use of the ship’s gym, which has floor-to-ceiling windows. Watching whales while on the treadmill? Peak multitasking.
Itinerary & Highlights
Day 1–2: Inside Passage (Cruising)
We spent the first two days enjoying the ship and soaking in views of forested cliffs and misty shorelines. Despite the drizzle, there’s nothing like sipping hot coffee while wrapped in a blanket on your balcony.
Day 3: Juneau
We wandered around downtown Juneau, then took a Lyft (approx. $50) to Mendenhall Glacier (entry fee: $5/person). From there, we hiked to Nugget Falls, which was powerful and peaceful despite the crowds. We took a taxi back to the port ($50).
Day 4: Glacier Bay (Cruising)
Sunny skies opened up just in time for Glacier Bay, and it did not disappoint. We lucked out with clear weather and crisp views of massive glaciers and floating ice. One of the most peaceful and awe-inspiring days of the trip.
Day 5: Skagway
We strolled through the historic gold rush town, then had lunch at Skagway Brewery (2 beers + 3 bowls of chili = $87). Afterward, we took a 2.5-hour Skagway City & Mountain Summit Bus Tour ($68 per person). It offered beautiful scenery, local history, and a welcome break from walking. We chose the bus tour over the more popular train tour because it was less expensive and offered scenic stops.
Day 6: Ketchikan
Ketchikan was walkable and charming. We visited the Totem Heritage Center ($6/person), learned about the local culture, and dodged a few raindrops while exploring Creek Street.
Day 7: Cruising the Inside Passage (Again)
One last full day to relax, hit the spa, and take in more sea life sightings. We also enjoyed a final Step One dance performance and an impressive Native Voices presentation onboard.
Was It Worth It?
Absolutely. Despite the soggy forecast, this cruise was full of warm memories, cool landscapes, and meaningful milestones. With thoughtful planning (and a balcony), even a rainy Alaska cruise can be magical.
